"The Right Door"

"Choosing the right door produces the best opportunity." We cannot always know what's behind every door, but some doors are so dilapidated that it becomes obvious not to go through that one. Choices are everything...literally! It is best to choose the right door.

This is an odd piece in the way it came together. There are actually two backgrounds, one adhered to the other. The top piece was torn, creating an erratic edge and then painted magenta. In person, it is very bright because of the silver and gold leaf, but the brilliance cannot be seen on a computer screen.

The door was painted with gouache and a palette knife and I felt like writing a very erratic line of lettering. Sometimes, I just get tired of everything being regimented and feel the need to break out into a "scrawl".

You can also see a clear division of space with the magenta producing a nice edge and several other shapes. This piece is all about texture which fits my mood today. It's different and it's funky and fits in perfectly with a relaxed Saturday.  So there you have it. Just a few more things to think about.

"Threshold" ($40.00)

Prayer is a holy activity that anyone can access immediately. The visual of stepping over a threshold brings the point home. If you want to know God...pray.

This doorway and the steps leading up to it appear to be floating in the air. Details were omitted that would have given context to the doorway. The "floating doorway" gives credence to the quote because the threshold that is crossed is obviously in the mind.

Anytime I want to focus on the ethereal, white seems to enter the process. So after painting the doorway, I sprayed the piece with Krylon Acrylic Coating to seal the gouache. With the help of white gesso and a 1.50" broad edged shaper tool, I was able to apply the gesso and take it off in areas to achieve the desired effect. The corner of a discarded credit card was used to inscribe gestural marks into the gesso. Rubbing alcohol and a stiff brush will remove any gesso or acrylic paint to create more texture. Just something to think about and experiment with.

A smile...a text message...or a kind word can let someone know that you are willing to give them a few moments of your time. As in yesterday's posting, it can also have a spiritual interpretation.

I've used the time honored combination of black, white, and red.  In fact...black and white plus one other color works every time it's tried. This is a good thing to remember the next time you have trouble deciding what colors to use. Give it a try!
